Pacific Northwest Koi Clubs Association

Non-Discrimination and Anti-Sexual Harrasment Policy

Pacific Northwest Koi Clubs Association (PNKCA) is committed to an environment in which all individuals are treated with respect and dignity. Each individual has the right to a professional atmosphere that promotes equal opportunities and prohibits discriminatory practices, including harassment. Therefore, PNKCA expects that all relationships among persons in the meeting places, workshops, seminars and conventions will be business-like and free of bias, prejudice and harassment.
A. Harassment on the basis of any protected characteristic is strictly prohibited. Under this policy, harassment is verbal or physical conduct that denigrates or shows hostility or aversion toward an individual because of his race, color, religion, sex, age, national origin, disability or any other characteristic protected by law.

B. Racial or ethnic harassment is also prohibited and is defined as any non-consenting conduct based upon race, ethnicity, or national origin that creates a hostile work environment.  Racial or ethnic harassment may include threats, physical contact, pranks, vandalism, or verbal, graphic, or written conduct directed at an individual or individuals because of their race or national origin.  This includes such things as racial or ethnic slurs, jokes, or offensive or derogatory comments.  Even if actions are not directed at specific persons, a hostile environment is created when the conduct is sufficiently severe, pervasive, or persistent so as to unreasonably interfere with or limit the ability of an individual to perform their function and/or job.

Harassing conduct includes, but is not limited to: epithets, slurs or negative stereotyping; threatening, intimidating or hostile acts; denigrating jokes and display or circulation in the workplace of written or graphic material that denigrates or shows hostility or aversion toward an individual or group (including through e-mail).

Individuals and Conduct Covered

This policy applies to all Past and Present Board Members, PNKCA Member Club Representatives, PNKCA Committee Members, and prohibits harassment, discrimination and retaliation whether engaged in by fellow association members or by someone not directly connected to PNKCA (e.g., an outside vendor, consultant or club member).  Conduct prohibited by this policy is unacceptable in any settings outside the meeting places, such as during business trips, business meetings and business-related social events.

Retaliation Is Prohibited

PNKCA prohibits retaliation against any individual who reports discrimination or harassment or participates in an investigation of such reports. Retaliation against an individual for reporting harassment or discrimination or for participating in an investigation of a claim of harassment or discrimination is a serious violation of this policy and, like harassment or discrimination itself, will be subject to disciplinary action.

PNKCA strives to maintain an environment that is free from intimidation, coercion, or harassment, including sexual harassment, of any individual of the association.  Accordingly, it is PNKCA’s policy to prohibit harassment of an individual by another individual or Board Member on the basis of sex.  The purpose of this policy is not to regulate our member’s personal morality.  It is to ensure that, in the meeting places, no individual or Board member harasses another individual on the basis of sex.  While it is not easy to define precisely what sexual harassment is, it certainly includes unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors and other visual, verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature, such as uninvited touching of a sexual nature or sexually-related comments.  Depending upon the circumstances, harassment can also include improper joking, teasing or other unwelcome conduct that creates an unprofessional and hostile work environment.

Any Board Member or PNKCA Representative who feels that he/she has been subjected to sexual harassment should immediately report the matter to one of the Executive Board members. Violation of this policy will result in disciplinary action, up to and including discharge.  Every report of perceived harassment will be investigated and corrective action will be taken where appropriate.  In addition, PNKCA will not allow any form of retaliation against individuals who report unwelcome conduct to the Executive Board, or who cooperate in the investigation of such reports, pursuant to this policy.
